Announcing an exciting opportunity to work on your photography on your own terms and study under the guidance of Alain Briot and Natalie Briot. The perfect combination of freedom, focused work opportunity and learning opportunity.
1 – A unique Artist in Residence Program
• Stay on a 40 acre property half a mile from Petrified Forest National Park.
• Receive personalized instruction, guidance and tutorials from Alain and Natalie Briot.
• Enjoy experiencing the landscape by living there for a week.
- Palavayu offers privileged access to the unique geological and archaeological features of the Painted Desert. In addition to that, the property also serves as a base camp from which you can access most of the world-famous scenery in the southwest (see list in part 3-What's nearby).
- Feel as if you were in a National Park without the limitations that exist in a National Park
- Palavayu is adjacent to Arizona State Land meaning you can hike from our property onto State Land and to Petrified Forest National Park. There is no need to drive to a trailhead. You are at the trailhead!
- The scenery is exactly the same at Palavayu and in Petrified Forest National Park. Park boundaries are by nature arbitrary. The beautiful scenery continues outside of the park boundaries. One way to look at this situation is to say we own private land located almost in Petrified Forest National Park.
2 - Staying there
- One week stay (7 days).
- The program is BYOT based (Bring Your Own Trailer).
- Your trailer or RV must have a septic toilet.
- There is no electrical, internet, phone, cable, septic or other hookup of any kind
- You must be self-sufficient. The closest help is in Holbrook, 20 miles away.
- You are responsible for preparing your meals (or you can eat at a restaurant).
- You must carry a cell phone with local access so we can contact you as needed during your stay.

4 - What is included
1- Your stay at Palavayu for the duration of the program (up to 7 days).
2- Program setup, personalized instruction, support, print review and teaching by Alain & Natalie Briot:
We meet with you on the first day of your stay to greet you, get you setup, introduce you to the area, and design a program of study for your photography. This program is aimed at reaching your specific goals. The length of this meeting is half a day minimum.
We meet with you over the phone for one hour mid-way through your residency. The cost of this call is included in the cost of the residency program.
We meet again at the end of your stay to look at the results of your residency, discuss your experience, conduct a print review and discuss any other subject related to your residency work. The print review needs to be conducted on this day and cannot be pushed back. If you do not have prints we will review your photographs on your laptop or desktop computer. The length of this meeting is half a day.
3 - Information on many of the locations accessible within a day drive and back. The information we provide you with will occupy your schedule for one week.
4-Information on additional as well as lesser known locations if your stay is longer than one week.
5- Portfolio presence and marketing opportunities on Beautiful-landscape.com (see below).

Palavayu - Under the Bluff
5 - Cost & registration
The cost of the program, including all the components described above, is $2995. Refund and other policies are identical to our workshop policies. Fees are due when the appointment for your residency is scheduled.
You will need to submit a portfolio of your work, consisting of approximately 10 photographs, prior to registering for the residency. You can email jpegs or mail us prints. One on one consulting students do not need to submit a portfolio.
To start the application process:
1- Email us at alain@beautiful-landscape.com or
2- Call us toll free at 800-949-7983 (or 928-252-2466
)
6 - Marketing opportunities
The Beaux Arts Photography Artist in Residence Program includes a unique marketing opportunity for students who are interested in selling their work. This opportunity is optional but extended to all residency students.
The portfolio, or selection of individual prints, created during your residency can be sold on beautiful-landscape.com and advertised to beautiful-landscape.com visitors and email newsletter subscribers. This approach effectively allows you to use the leverage of beautiful-landscape.com to advertise and sell your work.
If you select this option here is how it works:
1 - We will ask you to make a submission of the work you want to sell and at what price. Based on your submission we will make a selection of work from your residency and offer for sale on beautiful-landscape.com.
2 - We will advertise your work (prints or portfolio) on Beautiful-landscape.com
3 - A commission on the sale of your work will be charged. This commission will be 30% instead of the 50% normally charged by galleries (credit card fees are added to this percentage).
4 - The sale will be conducted through Beaux Arts Photography and Beaux Arts Photography will collect the funds.
5 - After the sale is completed we will email you the buyer’s information. You are responsible for printing, matting, framing and shipping your work.
6 - The page featuring your Artist in Residence work will be the page where your work is sold, simplifying web links organization. You can link to this page when doing your own promotions and announcements. This page will remain on beautiful-landscape.com for at least a year.
7 - Additional possibilities & opportunities
1 - We can schedule one or several print review sessions, after your residency, either over the phone or in person, at a unique “Artist in Residence Program” price: currently $250 instead of our regular $300 rate. This print review session can be used to review your work, learn how to print, mat, frame or package your work in order to offer it for sale, or for any other related purposes.
2 - We can recommend locations to sell your Artist in Residence work other than Beautiful-landscape.com If you choose this option we will schedule a one on one session or program with you to explore these options. The cost of this session or program is additional.
3 - We can schedule additional visits by Natalie and I during your residency, at your convenience, for example mid-way through your residency. These visits will be priced at our 1 on 1 consulting fee.
4 - You can double, triple, etc. the length of your stay at Palavayu. The weekly rate, benefits, visits, calls, etc. will be equally increased. You an also increase your stay beyond 7 days on a per-day basis. Additional days are priced at $425 per day. We will work out the number of supplementary visits and/or consulting calls based on how long you increase your stay.
8 - Important things to keep in mind:
- Bring clothing suited for a variety of temperatures, from cold mornings to warm afternoons. Also be prepared for potential rain and for active weather. To quote David Muench: "bad weather equals good photographs."
- Food, lodging and transportation are not included.
- We will email you directions to Palavayu as well as airport, hotel and other travel information when you register. You will then receive an email with our mutually agreed upon meeting time and place approximately 2 weeks before the start of your residency.
- You will be photographing from 4000 to 6000 feet elevation on average. Normally the only problem you can expect is a slight shortness of breath. However the higher elevation is something to keep in mind if you live at sea level or you are prone to encountering physical difficulties at higher elevations.
- An SUV, or a car with high clearance, is recommended. You will need to drive on a dirt road to access Palavayu.
- The program is limited to 3 students per semester.
