The Photograph
The 35th Alain Briot Print of the Month photograph is titled Horseshoe Bend. I photographed this location numerous times prior to creating this image. Specifically, I created both horizontal and vertical compositions. I found vertical compositions to be most pleasing to me, in part because they are uncommon and in part because they allow me to include a foreground element. In my prior attempts I used the sandstone rim of the canyon as a foreground. In this image I used one of the plants growing right along the edge because it was in bloom on this particular day.

The plant grows on a sandstone ledge that sticks out over the rim, thereby hiding part of the Horseshoe Bend. Since I couldn't move the plant, I had to decide whether hiding part of the river was ok or not. At first it bothered me to no end. But, as I thought about it I started to get very enthusiastic about this composition. I liked the flow and the rhythm it imparted to the image. As I composed the image I started to realize that my eye was completing the bend of the river around the Horseshoe by itself, and that I could easily imagine the water flowing in the area of the image hidden by the sandstone ledge. It was at that time that this image appeared to me as a viable option.
